Couple portraits before the wedding: uses, outfits, locations and prices

An engagement session starts at $350, and it's already included in wedding packages

An IAZ Photo Studio engagement session costs $350, $550 or $750 on its own, and it's included in all three wedding packages as the 1-hour Pre-Event Photo Session. It gives you photos of the two of you for your invitations and, more than anything, gets you comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding.

This guide covers what it's for, when to schedule it, what to wear, how to pick a location in Arizona and what each option includes.

What an engagement photo session is for

An engagement session does three things: it gives you photos of the two of you before the wedding, it lets you practice in front of the camera, and it shows you how the team works.

Photos for save-the-dates, invitations and a welcome sign

Session photos go on save-the-date cards, invitations, your wedding website or the welcome sign at your reception.

Getting over camera nerves before the wedding

Hardly anyone poses every day. An unhurried hour of practice means that on your wedding day you already know how to stand together, where to put your hands and how to look natural with a camera nearby.

Seeing how the team works

The session shows you how the IAZ Photo Studio team gives direction and how long a couple portrait takes. That pays off on the wedding day, when couple photos often happen between the ceremony and the reception, on a tight clock.

Engagement session prices when booked on its own

If you don't have an IAZ Photo Studio wedding package, or you'd like a separate session, these are the three options. All include one location, individual hand editing of every photo, an online gallery and 20% off prints.

SessionPriceWhat it includes
Essential$3501 hour, 10 edited photos
Classic$5501 hour, 20 edited photos and a 16×20 framed print
Signature$7501.5 hours, 30 edited photos and a 20×30 framed print

All three include 1 location, individual editing, an online gallery and 20% off prints. $150 non-refundable deposit; the balance 48 hours before. Usual turnaround: 2 weeks.

Session included in your wedding package or booked on its own

If you book a wedding package, you already have the session: it's the 1-hour Pre-Event Photo Session in all three packages. If you'd like another one, say an engagement session in the fall and a second one in your dress before the wedding, an extra pre-event session is $250.

If you only want the session, choose by how many photos you want and whether you'd like a framed print. Essential covers a few invitation shots; Signature, with an extra half hour, leaves time for an unhurried outfit change.

To book, you pay a $150 non-refundable deposit, with the balance due 48 hours before. You can reschedule with 72 hours' notice, and weather rescheduling is free. Usual turnaround is 2 weeks, or you can add rush delivery for $100. You can also add an hour for $100, 10 more photos for $105 or another location for $100.

When to schedule your engagement session

Schedule it early enough to use the photos where you want them. If they're going on invitations, count back from your mailing date: a standalone session's usual turnaround is 2 weeks, plus design and printing.

If it's the session included in your package, remember it takes place at least 2 weeks before the wedding. Beyond that, the date is up to you.

The season matters in Arizona, too. The National Weather Service defines monsoon season as June 15 through September 30 (NWS Tucson (opens in a new tab), checked November 7, 2026); if a storm changes your plans, the session is rescheduled at no cost. In summer, the Arizona heat and monsoon photo guide explains how to pick the time and shade, and our light-by-season guide lists the hours for every season.

What to wear to your engagement session

Wear clothes that feel like you, in colors that work together without matching exactly.

  • Coordinate, don't match: pick two or three colors from the same palette.
  • Solid colors or large prints: tiny checks and thin stripes distract in photos.
  • Fabrics that hold up: nothing that wrinkles in the heat or on the drive over.
  • Shoes for the location: one pair for walking on dirt or grass, and another for photos if you need it.
  • Hands and ring ready: fresh nails and a clean ring, since there will be detail shots.
  • One outfit change, two at most: with 1 hour and one location, every change takes minutes away from photos.

What to wear for each engagement session location

Outfits look their best when they go with the location instead of competing with it.

Location What works What to avoid
Desert with saguarosEarth tones, cream, terracotta and olive greenLong fabrics that snag on spiny plants; thin heels
Park or gardenPastels, white and light blueA green that matches the grass exactly
Downtown or muralsBold colors, black and denimPrints that compete with the mural

Where to have your engagement session in Arizona

Pick a place that says something about the two of you: where you met, where you got engaged or the park where you walk on Sundays. The session includes one location, and each additional location is $100.

  • Distance: A session with more than one location stays within 5 driving miles of the spot where it starts. There is no travel fee within 25 driving miles of Tempe, Arizona (I-10 and US-60); farther out, we quote the travel before you book.
  • Entry and parking fees: those are on you.
  • Permits: ask the location whether it requires a permit or charges for photo sessions, and let us know before the date.
  • Ideas by city: there are engagement session pages for Chandler (opens in a new tab) and Mesa (opens in a new tab), plus a Queen Creek photo locations guide (opens in a new tab).

We've also done couple sessions outside the Mesa area: one in Kaibab National Forest for a wedding in Williams (opens in a new tab), and another at Sahuaro Ranch Park for a wedding in Glendale (opens in a new tab).

Engagement session day checklist

  • Confirm the session time based on the season's light.
  • Ask the location about permits or entry fees, and bring money for parking.
  • Pick two or three colors for the two of you, without matching.
  • Bring walking shoes, plus a second pair for photos if needed.
  • Fresh nails and a clean ring for detail shots.
  • Water and a small towel, especially from May through September.
  • Something that tells your story: a sign, an accessory or a keepsake.
