How to decide between photography, video or both for your wedding

Wedding photography or videography: which to choose

If you can, book both: photos keep the moments and video keeps the voices, and one doesn't replace the other. If your budget only covers one, choose by what you'd hate to lose most: if it's seeing your mom's face in a photo on the wall, choose photography; if it's hearing the vows and the toast again, choose video.

With IAZ Photo Studio, photo and video together start at $2,150 with the Essential Package. Photo only or video only starts at $1,250. This guide helps you decide by situation, with no pressure and the prices in plain view.

What photography keeps and what video keeps

Photography and video keep different things from the same day. Understanding that makes the decision easier.

Photography freezes a moment and turns it into something you can hold: the portrait in the living room, the album passed from hand to hand at Christmas, the print you make for your grandmother. It's what you see most around the house for years.

Video keeps sound and movement: vows said in a shaky voice, the toast from your padrino or best man, the song from your first dance, the laughter of grandparents who may not be here in ten years. It's what the family watches again on anniversaries.

That's why couples who book only photos may later miss the voices, and couples who book only video may miss a portrait to hang. There's no single right choice for everyone; there's one that fits the two of you better.

If you want both, these are the packages that include them. They come with items the standalone packages don't: the 1-hour Pre-Event Photo Session, the 20×30 framed print and, starting with the Complete, the album, the highlight videos and streaming. To see each item explained, read what a wedding package includes.

When it makes sense to book both photo and video

Both services are the right call in these situations:

  • You have family far away. With the Complete Package, the Online Video Streaming Experience lets anyone who couldn't travel watch the video from anywhere.
  • There will be speeches, vows you wrote yourselves or a rehearsed dance. Those live in sound and movement.
  • You want an album and something for social media. The Complete includes the 30-page album and the 5- and 1-minute Event Highlight Videos.
  • You'd rather work with one team. One contract, one schedule and one delivery, with two people who plan the angles together.

At every event we film with two video cameras and bring backup equipment, so a failed computer costs time, never your footage. For a closer look at the film itself, see what goes into a wedding film.

Photo only: who it makes sense for

Photo only makes sense if you already have someone filming, if the wedding is short or intimate, or if what you want most is the album and the portraits. The Classic adds a 16×20 framed print, and the Signature adds an 8×8, 20-page album.

PackagePriceHours and locationsWhat it includes

Signature$1,8958 hours, 3 locations100 edited photos, USB, gallery, a 16×20 framed print and an 8×8, 20-page album

No pre-event session and no extras beyond the list.

Video only: who it makes sense for

Video only makes sense if the voices and the music matter most to you, or if a relative with a good camera is handling the photos. The Classic adds the 1-minute Event Highlight Video, and the Signature adds both the 1- and 5-minute highlights.

What you leave out when you choose one service

Before you decide, check what the standalone packages don't include, so nothing surprises you later:

  • They don't include the Pre-Event Photo Session. The combined packages do.
  • They don't include the other service. Photo only means no video, and the reverse; you don't get the other person's files either.
  • They cover fewer hours. They run from 4 to 8 hours; the combined packages run from 8 to 12.
  • Photo only doesn't give you every photo: you get 50, 75 or 100 edited photos depending on the package, and any more are purchased separately.

An honest note: we don't compare packages by price per hour to claim that one "saves" you money over another, because they include different things. Compare what you receive, not just the hours.

Common wedding situations and what we usually recommend

How to decide between photo and video in five questions

Answer these together, without thinking about price first:

  1. Twenty years from now, what do you want to see: a photo on the wall or a video on the TV?
  2. Is someone important unable to come?
  3. Will there be vows, speeches or a rehearsed dance?
  4. How many hours does your day run, from getting ready to the last dance? If you're not sure, read how many hours your wedding needs.
  5. Can someone you trust handle the other service?

If most of your answers point the same way, that's your decision. If you're split, a combined package settles it.

Common questions about photo, video or both

Which matters more at a wedding, photos or video?

It depends on what you want to keep. Photos keep the moments and become albums and wall prints; video keeps the voices and the movement. If you can, book both.

How much does photo only or video only cost?

From $1,250 for 4 hours, $1,550 for 6 hours or $1,895 for 8 hours, each with one photographer or one videographer.

Do standalone packages include an engagement session?

No. The photo session before the wedding comes only with the combined photo and video packages.

Can I start with photo only and add video later?

Ask us about your date. If a videographer is still free that day, we'll quote adding video or moving to a combined package, and it's best to decide before the final payment, one month before the wedding.

Where is your wedding?

Choose your wedding's city and check your date. We'll tell you which coverage fits your day and your budget.
