Cap and gown picture ideas, and how early to book your shoot

Graduate in a gown and stole tossing her cap into the air during a sunset photo session in Arizona, one of the most requested graduation photo ideas

A strong graduation session combines the gown, a look of your own and a place that means something

The ideas that work in a graduation photo session combine three things: the cap and gown, an outfit change that says who you are, and a place that means something to you. To have the photos before the ceremony and the party, hold the session about 6 weeks ahead and book it as soon as you know the date; at IAZ Photo Studio, graduation sessions run from $250 to $595.

Below you'll find 20 ideas, backdrops that work in Arizona, what to do with the photos and a checklist to print.

When to hold the session, based on what the photos are for

The session date depends on what you'll do with the photos. Count on about 2 weeks of usual delivery from your selection.

When to book a graduation photo session in Arizona

Book the session as soon as you have the ceremony date, because spring graduations usually fall in May and the dates before the ceremony go quickly. For example, Arizona State University holds its spring general commencement on May 10, 2027, according to its graduation calendar (opens in a new tab) (checked November 7, 2026; the university notes that dates may change); high schools post their dates on each district's calendar.

In May, the soft light comes late. In Phoenix, the sun sets at 7:11 pm on May 1, 2027 and at 7:32 pm on May 31, according to sunrise-sunset.org (opens in a new tab) (checked November 7, 2026). That's why we suggest starting about an hour and a half before sunset, or at sunrise if the heat is strong. The schedule for the whole year is in what time of day to schedule a photo session in Arizona.

If the graduate is under 18, an adult from the family comes to the whole session.

20 ideas for your graduation photo session

The ideas that work tell something about the graduate. Pick five or six and share them with the team when you book.

Ideas with the cap and gown

  1. The cap in the air, as many times as it takes.
  2. The decorated cap up close, if your school allows decorating it.
  3. The stole, cords and medals in a detail photo.
  4. Walking toward the camera with the gown open and the dress or suit underneath.
  5. The diploma or diploma cover, in your hands or next to the cap.
  6. The tassel on the right side, the gesture that says "I did it."

Ideas that tell your story

  1. Recreate your first-day-of-school photo, with the same pose and the gown on.
  2. Your sports uniform or gear, your instrument or your art.
  3. Your school letter jacket.
  4. The shirt of the college you're heading to, or the job you're starting.
  5. Your books or your study spot.

Ideas with family

  1. Mom or Dad wearing your cap, because the achievement belongs to everyone.
  2. With your younger siblings, the ones still in school.
  3. With your grandparents.
  4. First in the family to graduate, with a sign or a stole that says so.

Backdrops that work in Arizona

  1. The desert with saguaros in the last light of day.
  2. Downtown murals and streets, for a modern look.
  3. A park with trees and grass, green in spring.
  4. Your school or campus, if it allows sessions; check its rules first.
  5. Your home or neighborhood, where it all started.

If you want confetti, balloons or color smoke, ask the location first: many parks don't allow them.
