Where to take quinceañera photos in Payson, depending on your plan for the day

Quinceañera in a ball gown by the lake at Green Valley Park in Payson, Arizona, the most practical spot for quinceañera photos in Payson

In Payson, the most practical quinceañera photo spots are Green Valley Park and Tonto Natural Bridge

For a quinceañera's photos in Payson, the two most practical spots are Green Valley Park, the town lake, open 6:00 am to 10:30 pm, and Tonto Natural Bridge, a state park about 10 miles north that charges $10 per adult. A third option, for small groups, is the East Verde River crossings in Tonto National Forest.

And yes, we've worked there: in 2022 we covered Mariana's quinceañera, with the session, Mass and reception in town.

Mariana's quinceañera: what we've already done in Payson

Mariana's event page (opens in a new tab) shows a full quinceañera day in Payson, on August 27, 2022: the session in town, the Mass at St. Philip's Catholic Church and the reception at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino. It's our published proof in Payson.

Because Payson is more than 50 driving miles from Tempe, Arizona (I-10 and US-60), every event there carries a travel charge calculated on the full distance and agreed in writing before the date. The packages cost the same as in the valley: Essential $2,150, Complete $3,250 and Deluxe $4,995.

Green Valley Park: the town lake for the session with the court

Green Valley Park is the easiest spot for a session with all the chambelanes and damas: it's in town, at 1000 W. Country Club Drive, and opens 6:00 am to 10:30 pm, according to the Arizona Game and Fish community fishing page (opens in a new tab). The park covers 12 acres, with one main lake and two smaller ones, and its contact is the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism department.

The Town of Payson code (opens in a new tab) bars being in parks from 10:30 pm until sunrise without written permission, and it has sections for reserving facilities and requesting special event permits. We found no published rule on photo sessions, so if your group is large, ask the parks department before the date.

Tonto Natural Bridge: the stone bridge, on state park hours

Tonto Natural Bridge State Park (opens in a new tab) is about 10 miles north of Payson on Highway 87. It opens 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with last entry at 4:00 pm, and the trails close an hour before the park.

Check this before you plan the session there: - Closed areas: the Pine Creek and Anna Mae trails, and the area under the bridge, are closed because of flooding. The waterfall trail and the paved path over the bridge stay open. - Entry per person: $10 for ages 14 and up and $5 for ages 7 to 13; count the whole court in your budget. - No dogs on the trails. - Professional photos: the page posts no rules for sessions; call the park at (928) 476-4202.

The East Verde River in Tonto National Forest, for a small group

The East Verde River crossings (First, Second and Third Crossing) are at 7, 8 and 8.5 miles on Houston Mesa Road, according to the Tonto National Forest page (opens in a new tab). They're open all year, daytime only, and require an $8 per-vehicle pass if you buy it ahead at an office or store, or $12 at the machine on site.

There's no drinking water, so bring plenty. The Water Wheel area is closed because of flood damage.

In the forest, the permit depends on how many people take part, counting the photo and video team. The Forest Service (opens in a new tab) doesn't require one for 5 people or fewer in public areas, gives a no-cost authorization for 6 to 8 and requires a special permit from 9. That's why the river is for the quinceañera with her close family, not the whole court.

Mass at St. Philip's and the reception: confirm each venue's rules

St. Philip the Apostle (opens in a new tab) parish is at 511 South Saint Phillips Street, and its phone is (928) 474-2392; the Sunday Mass at 11:00 am is bilingual. Its page posts no rules for photo and video during Mass, so ask the office where the photographer can stand and whether filming from the aisle is allowed.

The Mazatzal Hotel & Casino (opens in a new tab) is a gaming enterprise of the Tonto Apache Tribe. For the reception, ask the venue about its photo and video rules and the hall's hours, and pass those details to us with the itinerary, which is due one month before.

How the day in Payson comes together when you drive up from the valley

Each package's hours are continuous and include travel between locations and waiting time. In Payson that matters: going from the natural bridge to the church and then to the reception takes coverage time.

  • If everything is in town (Green Valley Park, church and hall), the 8-hour Essential Package can be enough.
  • If you want the natural bridge on top of the Mass and the party, the 10-hour Complete gives more room.
  • Coverage ends at 10:00 pm; each extra hour is $150.
  • The Pre-Event Photo Session happens at least 2 weeks before, in the valley or in Payson; if it's in Payson, it's a separate trip and quoted separately.
